The origin of the "sax" (also known as the seax or scramasax) predates the fall of Rome.  This rugged and efficient single-edged blade was used by nearly all Northern European cultures throughout the early medieval period.  A sax could vary in size from a small utility knife up to a machete-like weapon with a blade length of nearly thirty inches.
